 DAVEED KORUP’S BIO

Master percussionist Daveed Korup sparks the imagination with his evocative synthesis of North African and Turko-Persian traditions interwoven with contemporary Western percussion styles.

Since 1983, Daveed has been on an ever-evolving rhythm journey. Through school programs, residency projects, summer drum camps, festivals and workshops, he shares his knowledge of world percussion through the guise of DrumFest!, a hands-on, multi-cultural drumming experience for people of all ages.

Daveed With RugsDavid is a true rhythm evangelist dedicated to the belief that “The world is a giant drum just waiting to be played. SO PLAY IT !!!” He is the percussionist for the Eurasian folk ensemble Turku and author of TAO TE DRUM - Eastern Drumming for Western Drummers, as well as the Creator of The Rhythm Circus, a hands-on, mobile percussion exploratorium under one roof, featuring the Gong Garden (a baker’s dozen gongs), the Drumnasium (percussion jungle gym) and The Wall O’ Drums.

As a composer, Daveed has brought a unique perspective to creating new works for contemporary dance. Now in his fifth season, he has become an integral member of the Moving Poets Theater of Dance, and has composed music for several world premiere productions, including De Profundis (based on the prison writings and court proceedings of British author, Oscar Wilde) and MacBeth. Daveed teamed up with Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame member Tom Constanten to create two original scores for the Moving Poets’ 2003-04 season—A Devil’s Dance (based upon the story of Faust) and Arabian Nights.

Daveed With Hat Looking for new challenges, Daveed has begun work on an opera based on The Dybbuk, a popular play of the Yiddish Theater in the early 20th century. This will be a collaborative effort with composer/percussionist, David Crowe who, a fellow member of Without Borders, a chamber ensemble for the 21st century.

In the fall of 2001, Daveed traveled to Samarkand, Uzbekistan as lead percussionist for Turku, representing the United States at the Third Annual Sharq Taronalari Music Festival, sponsored by UNESCO and the Uzbekistan government.

For over twenty years, Daveed Korup has performed with his mentor, Billy Woods in the eclectic percussion band, Seeds of Time.

Daveed is Illinois native and a graduate of Northern Illinois University
